About the Role
As a Payroll & Benefits Intern, you'll join our People Operations team and work directly with our Senior Director of Payroll & Benefits. You'll see how payroll, compensation, and benefits run across Colombia, the United States, and Canada inside a fast-growing, publicly traded fintech. This is a paid, learning-focused internship with a clear path to full-time conversion based on performance.
We are seeking a talented and motivated intern who is best in class with a high IQ plus a high EQ. No prior payroll experience is required; attention to detail, curiosity, and a good head for numbers matter more.
What You'll Do
- Help run monthly payroll: data entry, reconciliations, and documentation
- Keep payroll, benefits, and HR system data accurate, and flag anything that doesn't match
- Support benefits enrollments, changes, and employee records
- Help prepare documents for monthly, quarterly, and year-end audits
- Gather market data for compensation benchmarking
- Answer employee questions about payroll and benefits
- Spot manual steps we can automate, including testing new AI tools
What You'll Learn
- How multi-country payroll works, from Colombian labor law to US payroll and benefits rules (FLSA, ACA, ERISA, COBRA)
- How companies benchmark and set compensation
- How People Operations supports a company's growth, including Sezzle's bank charter readiness
What We Look For
- Current university student or recent graduate in Accounting (Contaduría Pública), Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Industrial Engineering, or a related field
- Strong attention to detail and comfort working with numbers
- Good Excel or Google Sheets skills
- English proficiency (written and spoken), since you'll work daily with US-based teams
- Native or near-native Spanish
- Discretion with confidential information
- Comfortable using AI tools such as Claude or ChatGPT to boost productivity, research, and communication
Nice to Have
- Coursework or basic knowledge of Colombian payroll, taxes, or labor regulations
- Interest in automation and process improvement
About You
- You have relentlessly high standards - many people may think your standards are unreasonably high. You are continually raising the bar and driving those around you to deliver great results. You make sure that defects do not get sent down the line and that problems are fixed so they stay fixed.
- You're not bound by convention - your success—and much of the fun—lies in developing new ways to do things.
- You need action - speed matters in business. Many decisions and actions are reversible and do not need extensive study. We value calculated risk-taking.
- You earn trust - you listen attentively, speak candidly, and treat others respectfully.
- You have backbone; disagree, then commit - you can respectfully challenge decisions when you disagree, even when doing so is uncomfortable or exhausting. You have conviction and are tenacious. You do not compromise for the sake of social cohesion. Once a decision is determined, you commit wholly.
- You deliver results - you focus on the key inputs and deliver them with the right quality and in a timely fashion. Despite setbacks, you rise to the occasion and never settle.
